Astrology and Culture
A few days ago, I came across a website and thread that was very
interesting. It
raised some interesting points about Modern Astrology being a bit
Eurocentric. A
lot of it originated from the Greeks and the planets named after the
Roman
deities. These people seem to believe that Astrology originated in
Africa. I am
not into the Afrocentric stuff myself, but I am open to different ways
of
looking at things. The whole Dogon people and their advanced knowledge
of
Astrology are very interesting. The people in the site believe that
Vedic
Astrology actually was brought from the Africans. They were referring
to them as
the Dravidians. Some of the stuff that I read comes off prejudiced
against
people of European ancestry, and that bugs me a little. I like seeing
that there
are some people of African ancestry that are into Astrology.
I have been thinking a lot about the zodiacs and thinking how the
Babylonians
were using a Sidereal Zodiac, but the Greeks were using a Tropical
Zodiac. Of
course, the Indians use the Sidereal Zodiac. They seem to be
influenced by the
Greeks. The terms, trikona for the trine houses and kendra for the
angle houses
are Greek terms.
I wonder if Western Astrology works because we're greatly influenced
by Western
Culture.
Somebody asked a question which got me thinking.
"I read in brother John G. Jackson's, "Introduction to African
Civilizations"
that Kemet had definite astrological signs/symbols that pre-dates the
greek ones
so in use today. . . . .
Knowing that imagery shapes thought and thought shapes behavior, can
it be That
Africans (globally) that are unaware of our historical perspective in
this
regard are actually acting outside of their true astrological
natures?"
As a person who is a little over 50 percent SubSaharan African, I
wonder myself.
If I was living in Africa would I relate more to an African
Astrological zodiac
chart than a Western Astrological zodiac chart?

The 12 signs of the Kemetic Astrological Zodiac:
Cat
Jackal
Serpent
Scarab
Ass
Lion
Goat
Cow
Falcon
Baboon
Ibis
Crocodile
There is also the Egyptian Zodiac. Well..it seems that were 2 Egyptian
Zodiacs.
There is the Pharaoh's Egyptian Zodiac and the Traditional Egyptian
Zodiac.
The former zodiac seems like it was influenced by the Greeks.
Being born on October 29th, and so I have Sun in Scorpio. My exgf
Meghann and
best friend Steve were born on March 30th, and so they have Sun in
Aries.
Supposedly, our sunsigns would be incompatible because they do not
have
gender, element, nor mode in common. They do share Mars as traditional
ruler of
Scorpio, but there are lot of astrologers would say that Pluto is the
sole ruler
of Scorpio. Of course, there are some astrologers that believe that
Pluto rules
Aries. Of course, there are astrologers that believe that both Mars
and Pluto
rule Scorpio. It turns out that Steve,Meghann, and I have Sun in Isis
in the
Traditional Egyptian Zodiac.
ISIS (MAR 11 - 31, OCT 18 - 29, DEC 19 - 31)
Wife of Osiris and symbol of motherly love. People born under this
sign are
ruled by love. They are lucky, ambitious and energetic. They are prone
to
restlessness and need change. Compatible with Osiris and Thoth.
In the Pharaoh's Egyptian Zodiac , Steve and Meghann have Osiris as
sunsign
OSIRIS (MAR 27 - APR 25)
Osiris is the god of the underworld. Those born under this sign are
full of
emotional paradox and are misunderstood by others because of it. They
are
enterprising but shy away from responsibility.
In the Pharaoh's Egyptian Zodiac, I have Wadget as sunsign
WADGET (OCT 28 - NOV 26)
Wadget is the goddess of the royal cobra. Those born under this sign
are
rational, cautious, conscientious, opinionated, and have a tendency
towards
pessimism and suspicion.
It's interesting that my tropical Zodiac sunsign is very different
from Steven
and Meghann's Tropical Zodiac sunsign but have the same sunsign in the
Traditional Egyptian Zodiac.
I am not sure about the Egyptian Zodiac being valid. I definitely
don't want to
fall in the Neptune delusion of believing in Egyptian Zodiac. There is
the Forer
Effect that I need to avoid.
http://www.experience-ancient-egypt.com/egyptian-zodiac-signs.html
Compatibility seems very relative depending on the zodiac system which
is linked
to culture.
I met a Native American that practices Aztec Astrology, and he doesn't
believe
that the Tropical Zodiac is valid either.
Of course, many Vedic Astrologers don't believe in the validity of the
Tropical
Zodiac.
I really think that it all comes down to cultural influences, and I
believe that
they are definitely connected to belief systems.
