Discussion:
Any advice on the 2nd House?

I often find that a planet's placement in the 2nd House of a chart doesn't
make much sense, if I take the 2nd House to be the area of life where the
planet will be most evident, which I think is the usual rule. The Sun in
the 2nd, especially, ought to mean self-expression mainly through money and
possessions, and preoccupation with these. But that never seems to fit the
subject.

I've had rather more success taking planets in the 2nd to indicate attitudes
to money and sources of gain and loss. (This is advocated by Davison among
others). But that's taking the planet as a description of the House instead
of vice versa, which seems all wrong. How do other people get on with
interpreting this House?

I interpret the 2nd house as the much more abstract concept of values,
so a planet in that house would indicate a more than usual concern
with how important things are. However, since I don't do charts much
these days, you should take that as a theoretical, rather than a
practical, comment.

Thank you very much. Edmond Wollmann in alt.astrology also says the 2nd
House rules personal values, only his postings don't give much information
about how this is used in practice.

Are you new here, or just been off for a while? The group isn't usually
this quiet, it just seems to have fallen off in the last few weeks. Happens
sometimes, I don't know why.

Just to complicate things, I find that in mundane charts it does make sense
to take planets in the 2nd House as concerned mainly with money and
property. For instance, in the chart for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,
Pluto is in the 2nd, and you could plausibly take that to mean that the
property of BP (big business - Pluto) is threatened financially by the
bursting of the rig (square Uranus, explosions, and Jupiter, expansion, in
Pisces, natural gas) and also by the local people being prevented from
fishing (square on the other side to Saturn, restriction, in the 11th, the
people). It makes sense. In the foundation chart of the USA (at least the
Gemini one), the Sun and Mercury are in the 2nd, which also seems rather
apt. But natal charts seem to be different.

I also find it doesn't make much sense. The Sun here can represent
body builders, thats one of the more concrete answers I've got.

Pluto here can signify eating disorders.

It's a wide rule though in both cases

Because it represents personal values it could be the area that only
the native themselves know.

I have loads of planets in this house and I have problems with my
throat.

Madonna has Venus 2nd which shows she makes money through the arts.
That seems to make sense as a basic formula
