It just dawned on me that an interesting alignment happens every
beginning of the New Year.

It's Sun-Earth-Jupiter-Node alignment

Every beginning of the year,
The Sun is conjunct the Geocentric South Jupiter Node, oppose the
Geocentric North Jupiter Node
The Earth is conjunct/oppose the Heliocentric Jupiter Nodes

for the beginning of this year
January 1, 2011
Greenwich, UK
12:00 AM:

Sun in 10'12 Capricorn
conjunct Geocentric South Jupiter Geocentric Node in 10'31 Capricorn
oppose Geocentric North Geocentric Node in 10'30 Cancer

In Heliocentric Chart:

Earth in 10'12 Cancer
conjunct/oppose Heliocentric Jupiter Nodes in 10'34 Cancer/Capricorn

It indicates a day of expansion, optimism, judgment that pertains to the
collective.

Jupiter's North Node in Cancer, where Jupiter is exalted, sounds like
a really good thing!
