Discussion:
Reading a bi-wheel

It's the new person again!
Can anyone give me some direction on reading a bi-wheel chart. I have
a program that creates a bi-wheel showing current day transits with my
natal chart. I do not know how to interpret the bi-wheel and if it's
not too much trouble, can someone give me some direction, or a web
site that I can use to help?

Thanks so much

As I understand it, a 'bi-wheel' is a convenience offered by some
astrology software for allowing an instant look at a chart and at
its transits of the moment. From your question above, it seems
that the bi-wheel is giving you more problems than you would
otherwise have if you were merely looking at the ephemeris for
the transits to your natal chart.
*
As to directions, the same principles for interpreting transits
should apply to the bi-wheel: Start with the so-called slow-
moving planets and see how they affect your natal chart.
*
If you do not see anything major, then go to the next planets and
look for the same thing.
*
Finally, go to the so-called fast-moving planets and see if they
affect your chart in any way.
*
Normally, you should get from this examination a short catalogue
of various aspects formed between the transiting planets and your
natal chart.
*
You call yourself a 'new person'. This does not necessarily mean
that you are a beginner, but just in case you are, I would
recommend that you observe *retroactively* your transits from the
past, so as to familiarize yourself with the manner in which you
were affected by them. Then, with that knowledge in mind, you
might be able to anticipate how current and future transits might
affect you.
*
This, of course, requires that you be old enough to have
experienced a few major transits in your life, so as to be able
to understand how they affected you.
*
Have a nice day, folks!

A book which may be of interest in interpreting transits is called The
Changing Sky. It tells how to interpret the transiting planet by
house and sign and aspect I believe. Another book which I recommend
that will cover much of astrology in general, including transits, is
called The Compleat Astrologer. Yes that is the way it is spelled.

The Compleat Astrologer is out of print now but it is a brilliant book. It
is by Derek and Julia Parker.
A good book about progressions and transits is Predictive Astrology by
Christine Shaw. It has nothing about calculating, but it has very full
interpretations of each placing, with examples of things that have happened
to the author's clients under each configuration. Anything else you want to
know, post again and see if any of us know the answer.

Thank you for your answers.

Claude: I am in my "very early 50's". I am not really a beginner,
as I can determine what a lot of the aspects and angles mean in
relation to a natal chart as long as they are drawn in by the program
that creates it.
The bi-wheel confused me because I just
don't know how determine the angles of the two charts. I hope I am
making sense. I am confused because in most natal charts the
angles are drawn in when charts are drawn and that makes it easier for
me whereas the
bi-wheel does not have those angles shown.

I have Solarfire 7, and when a bi-wheel is constructed, there are not
any
angles shown so I would have to figure them out myself, which I cannot
do
at this point in my learning. Therein lies the problem.

BikerMagi: I have heard of the Changing Sky. Isn't that a book
by Stephen Forest?

A.B. I will see if I can find The Compleat Astrologer. Sometimes out
of print books show up here and there.

Thanks again for your responses and I hope I clarified my issues in
the blurb
above.

Makes perfect sense. Aspects to a natal chart are difficult
enough to read without adding to them the complexity of aspects
of transiting planets to the natal chart. Either the bi-wheel
produces both sets of aspects, which overloads the graph and
makes it almost impossible to read, or it does not print aspects,
in which case you have to draw them yourself.
*
Which is why I do not like using a bi-wheel; I prefer -- given my
age :-) -- to use the good old-fashioned ephemeris and place
transiting planets on the natal chart in my head, so as not to
overload the chart.

From what you wrote above, it seems that you have become
dependent upon what the software gives you; you might begin to
train yourself into calculating in your head which aspects, if
any, a given transiting planet produces at any given time. Thus,
you will gradually get used to this mental gymnastics and 'see'
aspects, even if they are not yet drawn by the software.

*
Understood. Perhaps you might begin by learning all of the
aspects in your natal chart, so as not to have to rely upon the
software to show them to you. As these aspects never change, this
is a one-time job.
*
Then, you might be able to see better which aspects, if any,
current transits are making to your natal chart. It is a case of
simple geometry: If you have a trine between two planets in your
natal chart, then, automatically, a transiting planet to one of
these planets will also make a trine to the other. As they used
to say in school: Two things equal to a third one are equal to
each other.
*
If this confuses you further, forget it! ;-)

I cut and pasted this answer, can you explain a bit more because this

Not the best possible manner of explaining the relation between a
natal chart and its transits, I say. So, let me try again.
*
If you have learned by heart all the aspects in your natal chart,
you don't need any instrument or calculation to find them: You
already have them in your head. And you need to do this only
once, as your chart never changes.
*
Next come the transits.
*
To see how they affect your natal chart, you may use an aspect
finder, if you can find one, or you can look at your bi-wheel to
see if any transiting planet 'activates' some elements in your
natal chart.
*
Example: Currently, Pluto is transiting at the beginning of
Capricorn. If, in your natal chart, you have planets in aspect of
that point in Capricorn, then your aspect finder will show them
to you. If you don't have such a device, you can still see
whether Pluto is making a conjunction, an opposition, a square, a
trine, a sextile, a semi-square, a sesqui-square, a semi-sextile,
a quincunx, or any other aspect which may strike your fancy, to
one (or more) of your planets.
*
Knowing your natal chart helps you in that process, because your
natal chart never changes, its aspects never change, and your
transits ALWAYS HIT YOUR NATAL CHART IN THE SAME MANNER. Which is
why they are personal to you, even though transiting planets are
at the same place in the sky for everybody.
*
Doing this for the past also helps, as you might remember how you
felt when transit 'X' happened, thereby 'preparing' you for how
transit 'Y' will make you feel. Transits are never the same, but
they have a pattern to them, and that pattern is your natal
chart.

Excuse me if I might be a little out of the subject but I could not
help but appreciate the way you extend a helping hand to beginners and
semi beginners, may I suggest that each one of us make a list of the
books and tools that helped him most in the study of astrology and the
most common ones are to be put in one list same as web-sites ready for
use to any one who needs it in this group, Thank you.

You can buy an aspect finder, it is made of clear plastic.
You place it over the chart and it shows you the aspects
hope this helps you.

OK, then. What I get from this is that you have a bit of a handle on
interpreting aspects, but fail to see how they are formed.

You need a geometry lesson.

Solar Fire uses aspect sets, and if you can find that part of the program's
setup you can look at the aspects and their angles and orbs.

Solar Fire also does what is called a "Synastry Chart", which is an aspect chart
for a biwheel. That should be informative.

I wounldn't even attempt to make all the l'il coloured lines in the middle of
the chartwheel for a biwheel - too messy to be useful.
